Before delving into the best strategies for winning blackjack, it’s important to have an understanding of how the game of blackjack is played. First things first— the only person you have to worry about beating is the dealer. There may be multiple people playing at the same table as you, but it’s not your goal to beat them; you need only concern yourself with the dealer. So, how exactly do you beat the dealer? Blackjack is often referred to as 21, and the reason for this is the goal of obtaining 21 points. If you manage to get 21 points- you win! If nobody reaches 21, then the winner is whoever is the closest to the number 21, but doesn’t go over. Each card has a point value associated with it. Cards 2 through 10 are worth their face value; kings, queens, and jacks are worth 10 points, and aces can be worth either 1 or 11 points.

Once all bets are placed, each player is dealt one card face up, including the dealer. After the first cards are dealt, another round of cards is dealt to each player, also face up. However, the dealer takes their second card facedown. So, the dealer can see what you have, but you cannot see what the dealer has. What happens next is where the strategy comes into play.

There are two base level options every player has after their cards have been dealt —they can stand or they can hit. If you stand that means you accept the cards you have, and if you hit then that means you will be dealt another card. If you simply Google ‘blackjack strategy’ several pictures of colorful charts will pop up. These charts are a good studying tool that tell you whether you hit or stand based on what cards you have and what card the dealer has.

The basic rules are this: if you have 17 points or more, you should stand, no matter what the dealer has; if you have less than 17, it becomes a bit trickier. If you have 16 or lower, most charts suggest to stand if the dealer’s card is a 6 or lower, but to hit if the dealer’s card is a 7 or above.

The aforementioned is just scratching the surface of blackjack strategy. Here at basis.or.at, we aim to provide you with as much information as possible on strategy, so your chances of winning are the best they can be. After the elementary strategies of when to hit or when to stand are mastered, you can move onto more complex strategies such as splitting and doubling down.

We’ll start off with the strategies associated with splitting. Many blackjack games offer players the option of splitting, which is a way to increase your overall winnings. Whenever you are dealt a pair, you have the option to place an additional wager and “split” your hand into two separate hands. You are essentially playing two hands against the dealer’s one hand. But, just because you are dealt a pair does not mean you should always take the option of splitting your cards. If you end up with a pair of 10s, jacks, queens, or kings it’s best to not split your cards because you’ll already be sitting quite nicely at 20 points. If you end up with a pair of Aces or a pair of eights, it’s in your best interest to split, no matter what the dealer is showing. Lower number pairs are more dependent on what the dealer is showing. For example, if you had a pair of 6’s you would need to take the dealer’s card into account in order to strategize appropriately. If the dealer has a 6 or below, then it’s a good idea for you to split up your pair. However, if the dealer has above a 6 then you should hit.

In addition to splitting your hand, there is also another winning strategy known as the double down. The double down allows you to double your initial wager. A player can choose to double down if the first two cards dealt equal 9, 10, or 11. If you decide you want to double down then you place an additional bet equal to your initial bet and the dealer gives you one more card face down. You are allowed to flip the card ones all of the bets are settled at the end of hand. Just like with splitting, it’s important to realize when you should double down and when you should avoid it. If your hand equals 11, it’s recommended that you always double down no matter what the dealer is showing. If your hand equals 10, then doubling down is a good way to go unless the dealer is showing a card worth 10 or an Ace. If the latter is the case then you should just hit, because the likeliness that the dealer will have 20 or 21 is quite high. If your hand equals 9, then you should only double down if the dealer’s card is fairly low.

As with any game or skill, the more you practice, the better you will be. If you’re new to blackjack and blackjack strategy, you probably shouldn’t immediately start off by placing big bets. You should take your time and find out which strategy and variant of blackjack works best for you.
